We all use the Internet. From checking our e-mail, banking, Facebook and watching the Sports Center highlights. But how does ou computers actually connect to the Internet? This chapter will cover the basics on Internet connectivity trough telephone wires, cable TV lines, and CAT 5cabling.

One of the greatest things about the Internet is that nobody really owns it. It is a global collection of networks, both big and small. These networks connect together in many different ways to form the single entity that we know as the Internet. In fact, the very name comes from this idea of interconnected networks.

Today, handheld communications devices is a necessity for everyone around the world. Communication is a vital part of our society and the desire to have the latest and greatest gadgets is a must have item. Even cavemen and Native American Indians used smoke signals to communicate to other tribes. The telegraph and Morse code were used by the U.S. Military. Telephones are in everyone’s home and used to make long distance calls. Can you think of what was your first type of communication device?
